You see, I’ve had this desire to share my vision of helping others through the gift of encouragement ever since the man who encouraged me to professional success died. You’ll read about him in my story. But first I want to tell you about my purpose…

I have always been a learner. I devoured books, magazines, and would have been completely lost without our family’s set of Encyclopedias.

But there was a time in my life when I lost my way and didn’t live who I was. But, like all our natural talents, it couldn’t be suppressed or forgotten for long. And here’s why…

You can be inspired to a new life by a simple thought put into your mind

One day I walked into a fly-fishing shop out of curiosity and there saw the beautiful flies and elegant fly-rods and knew my next adventure. I devoured books and videos about fly-fishing, but really, really enjoyed the biology of the trout and aquatic insects they eat. But there was a problem…

I was working at a treatment center for children with life problems… and it was shutting down. I didn’t know what I would do next. Then, my life changed during a short after-work trip to the river with my work-mate Bill just to get out. Bill asked me a simple question: you love trout and rivers. Why don’t you go study fishery science?

That little encouragement was all it took to send me back to the university and enroll into the fisheries science program. And it was there that I gained the self-confidence in myself to change my life.

And my new journey began…

At the university I took classes and devoured books on fish biology, aquatic ecology, lakes, and rivers. But despite my growing knowledge I still lacked confidence. That was about to change. Here’s why…

My fisheries professor, Dr. James Schooley, pushed me to expand my skill and knowledge. I really respected and admired him because of his professionalism and his love of teaching.

One day he simply stated that when I finished I should really consider graduate school and that I should go on to be a PhD scientist. I will never know what he saw in me because he passed away before I got a chance to ask him. But hearing that he believed I was intelligent and hard-working enough to go after an advanced degree completely changed my belief in myself.

I carried his encouragement to complete my PhD ten years later. In the most difficult times I would hear his words and they would carry me on.

But that simple encouragement did more than just lead to an advanced degree. It actually created a launching pad for my life to rocket to places I never thought possible.

Like right now, creating a business out of my passion for creating a better world through encouragement and positive words.
